What is the GS Pay Scale?
People in technical, professional, administrative, and clerical jobs get the majority of their pay as part of the General Schedule (GS), which is the most popular pay scale for federal workers. The agencies are free to post advertisements and fill positions at whatever grade they consider necessary. Each time you progress through the steps and grades after having been employed, you’ll be rewarded with a boost. Employees in the federal government typically advance one step each year.
There are several occupations that are described as “career ladder” positions. This means that an employee can apply to be promoted to a higher grade without needing to apply for new jobs. For instance the GS-5/7/9 ladder permits a fresh graduate to move from a GS-5 to a GS-7 , and finally a GS-9 , without having to change jobs within as little as three years from the date of graduation! Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is divided into two components that are the base pay and the location pay adjustment. This General Schedule base pay is modified to account for variations in the cost of living in different geographic regions. This means that a biological scientist who is entry-level with a GS-7 pay scale located in San Francisco earns more money than a biological scientist at the entry level who earns a salary in Atlanta because there is a higher cost to living San Francisco is greater than that of Atlanta.
Additionally, wages outside of the continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent more that those in the nation. This is due to the fact that the government also offers select employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). The workers who live anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help pay for the high costs of living in these areas.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is used in the vast majority of federal agencies, however, over 40 agencies or subcomponents have their own pay scales.
