Each time you progress through the steps and earn a higher grade after having been employed, you’ll get a bump. Employees in the federal government typically advance one step each year.
There are several occupations that are classified as “career ladder” jobs. Therefore, employees can be eligible for advancement to a better grade without the need to apply for a new job. For example, a GS-5/7/9 career ladder allows a new graduate to transition from a grade 5 to a G-7 to a GS-9 without changing employment in just three years from the time of graduation! Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system, a salary is divided into two parts The base pay and the pay adjustment for the location. A General Schedule base pay is modified to account for variations in living costs in various geographical areas. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level earning a GS-7 salary from San Francisco earns more money than a biological scientist at the entry level with a salary of Atlanta since the cost of living in San Francisco is greater than the cost of living in Atlanta.
In addition, wage rates outside the continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent more than wages in the country. This is due to the fact that the government also provides certain employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). The workers who live anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help offset the high cost of living in these areas.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is used for the bulk of the government departments; however, over 40 agencies or agency subcomponents have their own pay scales.
