Even if you’ve never worked for the government before you can benefit from your previous employment and education to be eligible for a higher grade. Every time you advance through the steps and earn a higher grade after having been hired, you’ll get a bump. Federal employees typically advance one step each year.
There are many occupations that are referred to be “career ladder” jobs. This means that employees can be eligible to move up to a higher grade without needing to apply for a new job. Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is divided into two parts The base pay and the location pay adjustment.
