What is the GS Pay Scale?
Workers in professional, technical, administrative, and clerical jobs have the most earnings according to the General Schedule (GS), which is the most commonly used pay scale for federal employees. Each time you progress through the steps and earn a higher grade after being employed, you will get a bump. Federal government employees generally advance by one step per year.

Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
In the GS system the salary is split into two components that are the base pay and the pay adjustment for the location. The General Schedule base pay is modified to reflect variations in the cost of living in various geographical areas. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level who earns a GS-7 salary located in San Francisco earns more money than a biochemist at entry-level who earns a salary in Atlanta because costs of living in San Francisco is greater than the cost of living in Atlanta.
Additionally, wages outside of the continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher that those in the nation. This is because the government also provides certain employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Workers who live and work anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to pay for the high costs of living in these locations.
