Pay and Cost of Living Allowance

Under the GS system the salary is divided into two components The base pay and the location pay adjustment. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level earning a GS-7 salary from San Francisco earns more money than an entry-level biological scientist making a living in Atlanta since costs of living in San Francisco is greater than those living in Atlanta.

Furthermore, wage rates outside of the continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher that those in the nation. This is because the government also provides select employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Workers who live and work in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help to offset the cost of living in these areas.
