What is the GS Pay Scale?

- Above the GS-15 are considered to be members of the Senior Executive Service.
Agencies are free to advertise and fill positions at any grade they consider necessary. Even if you have never worked for the government before, you may draw on your previous experience and educational background to qualify for a higher grade. Every time you advance through the steps and earn a higher grade after being employed, you’ll receive a raise. Employees in the federal government often advance one step every year.
There are several occupations that are classified as “career ladder” roles. This means that the employee is eligible to move up to a higher grade without the need to apply for new employment. For instance, a GS-5/7/9 career ladder permits a fresh graduate to progress from a GS-5 to a GS-7 to a GS-9 , without having to change jobs in just three years from the date of graduation! Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is divided into two parts: the base pay and the local pay adjustment. This General Schedule base pay is altered to account for differences in living costs in various geographic regions. This means that an entry-level scientist with a GS-7 pay scale located in San Francisco earns more money than a biological scientist at the entry level earning a salary in Atlanta as the cost of living in San Francisco is greater than the cost of living in Atlanta.
Furthermore, wages outside mainland United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher than the ones in the United States. This is because the government also provides certain employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Those who live and work anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help pay for the high costs of living in these locations.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is utilized across the entire government, however, more than 40 agencies, or subcomponents of agencies are able to use their own scales of pay.
