The agencies are free to post advertisements and fill vacancies at any grade they feel is needed. Even if you’ve not worked in the government before, you may make use of your previous work experience and education to be eligible for a better grade. When you make progress through the steps and grade levels after being employed, you’ll be rewarded with a boost. Federal employees often advance one step every year.
There are many occupations that are referred to be “career ladder” roles. This means that the employee is eligible for advancement to a higher grade without the need to apply for a new job. Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is split into two components that are the base pay and the adjustment for location. This General Schedule base pay is adjusted to take into account variations in the cost of living in different geographic regions. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level with a GS-7 pay scale at San Francisco earns more money than a biochemist at entry-level earning a salary in Atlanta since the cost of living in San Francisco is greater than that of living in Atlanta.
Additionally, wages outside of mainland United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher than those inside the country. This is due to the fact that the government also provides certain workers with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Workers who live and work anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help to offset the cost of living in these areas.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is employed in the vast majority of federal agencies, however, more than 40 agencies and subcomponents of agencies each has their own set of scales for pay.
Within the GS system, many agencies use unique pricing.
