Even if you’ve never worked for the government before, you can draw on your previous experience and educational background to qualify for a higher grade. Every time you advance through the steps and grades after being employed, you will earn a rise. Employees in the federal government typically advance one step each year.
There are several occupations that are described as ‘career ladder’ roles. Therefore, an employee can apply to be promoted to a higher grade without the need to apply for new jobs. For instance, a GS-5/7/9 career ladder permits a fresh graduate to go from a GS-5 to a GS-7 , and finally a GS-9 , without having to change jobs within three years from the time of graduation! Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
In the GS system the salary is divided into two parts that are the base pay and the pay adjustment for the location. In the General Schedule base pay is modified to reflect variations in the cost of living in various geographic regions. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level who earns a GS-7 salary from San Francisco earns more money than a basic biological scientist earning a salary in Atlanta because the cost of living in San Francisco is greater than that of Atlanta.
Furthermore, wage rates outside of mainland United States are typically 10 to 25 percent more than the ones in the United States. This is because the government also grants select employees with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Workers who live and work anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help offset the high cost of living in these areas.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is utilized by the majority of government agencies; however, over 40 agencies, or subcomponents of agencies each has their own set of scales for pay.
