- Above the GS-15 are considered to be members of the Senior Executive Service.
Agencies are free to advertise and fill vacancies at any grade they consider necessary. Even if you have never worked for the government before, you can benefit from your previous employment and education to be eligible for a higher grade. When you make progress through the steps and grades following having been hired, you’ll receive a raise. Employees in the federal government generally advance by one step per year.
There are several occupations which are known as “career ladder” positions. As a result, employees can be eligible for advancement to a higher grade without having to apply for new employment. Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is split into two components: the base pay and the adjustment for location. The General Schedule base pay is modified to account for variations in living costs in various geographical areas. This means that a bioscientist at the entry level earning a GS-7 salary from San Francisco earns more money than a biochemist at entry-level who earns a salary in Atlanta because the cost of living in San Francisco is greater than those living in Atlanta.
Furthermore, wages outside mainland United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher that those in the nation. This is due to the fact that the government also grants select workers with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Those who live and work on the coasts of Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help offset the high cost of living in these areas.
