Every time you advance through the steps and grades after having been employed, you’ll get a bump. Federal employees typically advance one step each year.
There are a variety of jobs which are known as “career ladder” positions. This means that employees can be eligible to move up to a higher grade without having to submit an application for new employment. Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system the salary is broken down into two components which are the base salary and the adjustment for location. A General Schedule base pay is modified to account for variations in the cost of living in various geographical areas. This means that a biological scientist who is entry-level working for a GS-7 wage at San Francisco earns more money than a basic biological scientist earning a salary in Atlanta due to the fact that there is a higher cost to living San Francisco is greater than those living in Atlanta.
Furthermore, wage rates outside in the Continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent higher than wages in the country. This is due to the fact that the government also offers select workers with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). People who reside and work on the coasts of Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help pay for the high costs of living in these regions.
Special Rates
