Agencies are free to advertise and fill positions at the grade they believe is necessary. Even if you’ve not worked in the government before, you can benefit from your previous employment and educational background to qualify for a higher mark. Every time you move up the steps and earn a higher grade after being employed, you will earn a rise. Federal employees often advance one step every year.
There are several occupations which are known as “career ladder” roles. This means that employees are eligible to be promoted to a higher grade without having to apply to a new position. For instance, a GS-5/7/9 career ladder permits a fresh graduate to progress from a GS-5 to a GS-7 to a GS-9 , without having to change jobs in just three years from the time of graduation! Pay and Cost of Living Allowance
Under the GS system, a salary is divided into two components The base pay and the pay adjustment for the location. This General Schedule base pay is adjusted to account for differences in the cost of living in various geographic regions. This means that a biological scientist who is entry-level who earns a GS-7 salary in San Francisco earns more money than a biological scientist at the entry level earning a salary in Atlanta because it is more expensive to live in San Francisco is greater than that of Atlanta.
Furthermore, wage rates outside of in the Continental United States are typically 10 to 25 percent more than those inside the country. This is because the government also provides select workers with a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). People who reside and work anywhere in Alaska, Hawaii, or the United States territories will get a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help reduce the price of living in these areas.
Special Rates
The General Schedule (GS) Pay Scale is employed across the entire government, however, over 40 agencies or agency subcomponents each has their own set of scales for pay.
